[ X + Y ] What's a posthuman?

Lesson Two :) First of all I need to answer to the question I made in the first [X + Y] post. Why Gehenna Inc. wish to support transhumanism? The respose is pretty simple: because I believe that human beings as we know them nowadays are NOT the last stage of evolution. It’s terribly egoistic to think we can’t get better than this, and absolutely stupid to believe that our duty is to preserve this stage and not to try to reach the next one. I don’t care if this logic will carry human beings at the edge of extinction: something else will take our place, a new kind of “better humans”, let’s say, posthumans. Moreover, I think we are supposed to try to express completely our potential, and not to repress it because of religious or ethical beliefs of part of humankind. At least, everybody should have the freedom of dispose of their life, mind and body as much as they like. This take us to the question: what is a posthuman?

The WTA faq answer this way:

It is sometimes useful to talk about possible future beings whose basic capacities so radically exceed those of present humans as to be no longer unambiguously human by our current standards. The standard word for such beings is “posthuman”. (Care must be taken to avoid misinterpretation. “Posthuman” does not denote just anything that happens to come after the human era, nor does it have anything to do with the “posthumous”. In particular, it does not imply that there are no humans anymore.)

Many transhumanists wish to follow life paths which would, sooner or later, require growing into posthuman persons: they yearn to reach intellectual heights as far above any current human genius as humans are above other primates; to be resistant to disease and impervious to aging; to have unlimited youth and vigor; to exercise control over their own desires, moods, and mental states; to be able to avoid feeling tired, hateful, or irritated about petty things; to have an increased capacity for pleasure, love, artistic appreciation, and serenity; to experience novel states of consciousness that current human brains cannot access. It seems likely that the simple fact of living an indefinitely long, healthy, active life would take anyone to posthumanity if they went on accumulating memories, skills, and intelligence.

Posthumans could be completely synthetic artificial intelligences, or they could be enhanced uploads [see “What is uploading?”], or they could be the result of making many smaller but cumulatively profound augmentations to a biological human. The latter alternative would probably require either the redesign of the human organism using advanced nanotechnology or its radical enhancement using some combination of technologies such as genetic engineering, psychopharmacology, anti-aging therapies, neural interfaces, advanced information management tools, memory enhancing drugs, wearable computers, and cognitive techniques.

Some authors write as though simply by changing our self-conception, we have become or could become posthuman. This is a confusion or corruption of the original meaning of the term. The changes required to make us posthuman are too profound to be achievable by merely altering some aspect of psychological theory or the way we think about ourselves. Radical technological modifications to our brains and bodies are needed.

It is difficult for us to imagine what it would be like to be a posthuman person. Posthumans may have experiences and concerns that we cannot fathom, thoughts that cannot fit into the three-pound lumps of neural tissue that we use for thinking. Some posthumans may find it advantageous to jettison their bodies altogether and live as information patterns on vast super-fast computer networks. Their minds may be not only more powerful than ours but may also employ different cognitive architectures or include new sensory modalities that enable greater participation in their virtual reality settings. Posthuman minds might be able to share memories and experiences directly, greatly increasing the efficiency, quality, and modes in which posthumans could communicate with each other. The boundaries between posthuman minds may not be as sharply defined as those between humans.

Posthumans might shape themselves and their environment in so many new and profound ways that speculations about the detailed features of posthumans and the posthuman world are likely to fail.

Enough for this time. In the next posts we will see some practical application of transhuman way of thinking.

007 . Interlude Part 3

Time for gothic girls to sigh again and dress their best black suits: the new HIM album is finally available. Since I'm a fetishist of nice cd boxes/digipacks/ultrarare editions I purchased the Internet Limited Edition (my issue is 18.586/20.000):

Inside the cool metal box I found a logo flashlight-chain (now I can project the HIM logo around, that's a little bit nerdy, I know ^__^), the 32 pages booklet, their signs and obviously the CD with two (nice) bonus tracks.
Ok, let's put it clear: Dark Light sounds more like a collection of songs than a homogenous work, and definitely it is NOT their best album (Razorblade Romance rules), but still few bands can write songs as catchy as them. I was a little bit disappointed after the first listening but after a while (as always happens with their songs) I fell in love with several tracks: the opener Vampire Heart, the sleeping hit Under The Rose, Killing Loneliness (oh man, the beginning is stolen from a 69 Eyes song - Still Water Run Deep! That's a catch 22, since 69 Eyes themselves always wanted to be as good as HIM…), Play Dead, the bonus track Venus (In Our Blood)...
The funny thing is that the titletrack really (REALLY) sucks. Shit happens.

Anyway it's a pity they wasted some good ideas (like the electronic outro of Under The Rose, that sounds senseless there and could have been used better) because, even if they still sounds great, they're not fresh as they were some years ago. We can expect more than this from Ville and his mates...Let's hope for a little revolution next time. And please, change hair cut Ville! Now you look like a fat version of Billy Joe...

006. Road To L.

Cthonian horrors unleash their utter madness in October!
Road To L. (great title, guys) is a film by Federico Greco and Roberto Leggio about H.P. Lovecraft and his mysterious links with Italy (underlying the finding of the Montecatini's Manuscript). Quoting from the website (www.roadtol.com):

"1997: A student of folklore named Andrea Roberti hypothesizes the possible link between the horror literature of H.P. Lovecraft and the dark folk tales of the Po Delta, a mysterious and remote part of northern Italy.

2002: One of the directors of the film comes across a manuscript in Montecatini (Italy) which may have belonged to the American writer.
This journal, dated 1926, describes travels in Italy through the Po Delta
in search of inspiration in the form of local folk stories: the Filò Tales.

2004: A small, tough crew of international filmmakers is put together with the help of David, a New York actor, to make a documentary on the finding of the journal and on the links between Lovecraft and the Po Delta.
If the manuscript really did belong to Lovecraft, it would be an extraordinary discovery.
As soon as they begin, however, the filmmakers find that Andrea Roberti disappeared in mysterious circumstances many years before, his car found abandoned on the banks of the Po.
The crew sets up its base in the town of Loreo – referred to simply as L. in the manuscript – as the author of the journal did.
During their investigations the atmosphere of animosity and foreboding rises and they soon discover that strange and disturbing things have been happening in the area. Events that the locals are eager to keep secret.

The film “Road to L.” is the true account of what took place behind the scenes of the 11 day shoot, reporting how the failures and revelations experienced in L. came to resemble ever more a journey to… Hell.

Did Lovecraft really come into contact with something sinister?
Did Andrea Roberti stumble across something he wasn’t meant to find?
The documentary makers are stepping too far into the unknown..."
